This third title in Capcom's saga of terror begins just hours before Resident Evil 2, and exists as a sort of side game (or sequel/prequel, depending on how you look at it). Jill Valentine, special S.T.A.R.S. operative, reprises her role as the hunted. The faceless evil of the Umbrella Corporation is loose on the streets in the form of genetically mutated undead, and Jill is trapped in the city. The object is simple: avoid becoming a zombie entree and get out of Raccoon City!

Resident Evil 4 is being appropriately billed as the game that takes the series in a bold, new direction. This seems immediately apparent just minutes after the game begins, when Leon is confronted not by the sorts of mindless zombies that typified previous Resident Evil installments, but by a haggard man who seems decidedly displeased by Leon's presence and completely ignores the threat of his 9mm pistol as he menacingly approaches, axe in hand. The game's humanoid enemies seem much more unsettling than your typical zombies, since they show basic signs of intelligence, yet their hatred for Leon far eclipses their own survival instinct. Still, it'll take just one slash of a sickle or one pitchfork gouging to teach you to terminate these savages without hesitation. They're creepy, memorable foes. And, without spoiling anything, they're just the tip of the iceberg.

Alone in the Dark 2 you take the role of Edward Carnby, one of the two main characters in the original Alone in the Dark. After his overnight ordeal in the haunted mansion of Derceto and his defeat of the undead Cthulian sorceror Pregzt, Carnby has gained something of a reputation as "the supernatural detective" (sounds a lot better than "the reptile", his original nick). Carnby is soon called upon to investigate a bootlegger named One Eyed Jack after an old detective college name Stryker attributes Jack to the kidnapping of young Grace Saunders. Stryker attempts to infiltrate Jack's dilapidated mansion of Hell's Kitchen and rescue the girl, only to disappear himself. That's where Carnby comes in. Carnby soon learns that Jack and his gansters are really 15th century pirates who gained immortality after Jack joined forces with Elizabeth Jarret, a Voodoo witch. However the dark magic which keeps them immortal also requires Jack and his crew to regularly make human sacrifices (which explains Grace's kidnapping). Carnby must battle his way through Hell's Kitchen and Jack's army of tommygun wielding gansters, searching for a way to break the spell and make them stay dead.
